Jazz singer pays tribute to Roberta Flack
![]() Denise Thimes POST-DISPATCH POP MUSIC CRITIC
Jazz singer Denise Thimes pays tribute to R&B legend Roberta Flack at a concert to raise money for pancreatic cancer research. Thimes, who used to cover Flack's "Killing Me Softly" back in the '80s, is answering the call of those who heard her do Flack's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" at a fundraiser last year and wanted more. Why Roberta Flack? We grew up on Roberta Flack, and we don't hear this kind of music enough, and that's not me putting down any type of music. Roberta was one of the first black women in the entertainment business that truly exuded a black woman with natural beauty, natural hair and a natural look. That's something we've gotten away from. What's your favorite Roberta Flack song? "Tryin' Times." Everything she sings in that song is still prevalent today. We should hear this song because it speaks to where we are, and ain't too much changed. Do you agree Roberta Flack is underappreciated? She should be more recognized as the icon she is.
